🤝 Action Fiction: Meet The Team
8 months ago – Wed, Jul 30, 2025 at 11:45:42 AM

My Fellow Murkans,

We’ve got a whole lot of returning backers, but also a lot of brand new folks who will be making their first journey into the world of Murka on this Backerkit campaign, so I wanted to take a second to formally introduce ourselves and talk a bit about who Action Fiction is and how Murka came to be!

So, without further ado…

*Record Scratch* Yep, That’s Us.

I bet you’re wondering how we got here. I know I sure am.

From left to right, that’s me (Jaron), my brother (CJ), and our best friend, Brad (Brad). This photo was taken at Origins Game Fair in June of this year.

And here we are on our way to a protest in our hometown of Columbus, Ohio, circa 2022. Unfortunately, this is one of the earliest photos I have of the three of us, because we’re notoriously bad at taking group photos, and have a tendency to take ... less serious photos.

Like this very serious photo from one of our writing sessions during work on our original RPG, Cthulhu Dreamt.

A Satirical Star is Born

Late one night in the summer of 2018, I awoke from a fitful sleep, plagued by the burden of what I was certain would be the greatest creative idea I might ever have. As is my habit, so that I don’t forget my greatest ideas, I reached for my phone and unlocked it. Bleary-eyed, I typed into my notes app all that I could stand to write before I collapsed back asleep, confident that when I awoke, I would be able to share this idea with my friends, and we would surely become brilliant game designers.

Of course, when I awoke and read this back, I had a lot of questions for sleep-drunk me. But, we committed to that particular bit, and we set to work on the very earliest versions of what would become Monsters of Murka. We had set a small goal for ourselves: a handful of monsters, maybe a subclass or two. And while it began as just a silly political satire project, the idea quickly blossomed into a complex combination of social commentary, tongue-in-cheek jokes, terrible puns, and creative game design challenges.

In 2019, we had our first crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to bring the world of Murka to life, which was a modest success, allowing us to make our game idea a reality. Perhaps more importantly, it showed us that we could really do this. We could be game designers. We could make games. And people wanted to play the games we wanted to make. Several months later, we had written 13 subclasses, around 20 monsters, a dozen spells, several backgrounds, and three fully-populated locations ready to be dropped into any D&D campaign and bring raucous, ridiculous laughter along with it. And the feedback we got was so positive, it blew us away.

We had so much fun designing it, and we had to cut a lot of content for length. The content that was cut was put into a “For Future Projects” document, and left to languish for almost a full year. Then, in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, we felt like it was time to open up the Book of Murka and add another chapter with Monsters of Murka: Restaurants & Retail. Shortly thereafter, our team grew to include some INCREDIBLE designers, and with fresh blood at the helm, we made Monsters of Murka: Chromatic Gamut in 2021 to end-cap the trilogy with a really magical queer-focused expansion.

Somewhere along the way, we formally decided to create a company “name” for ourselves, and Action Fiction was born (fun fact: the name came, in part, from sitting in traffic a few blocks from my apartment, stopped at a red light behind a lawncare truck with the word “Action” written on it. You stare too long at a word and you’ll start to get funny ideas, too). At the time, Action Fiction was mostly just a “cool” name—if you’re gonna make a book, you gotta have a “cool” studio name attached to it, of course! (a peek into the brains of some 25 year olds, lmao)

But, over time, our team expanded to include other incredible creatives, like Tim “Strato” Bailey and Manuel “Snails” Olonia (two designers from Restaurants & Retail that have helped us to create some of our best Murka content over the years), Adam Baffoni (my creative soulmate and designer of the Tether RPG), Bianca Papalardo (our incredibly brilliant art director), and Cheyenne Roller (our marketing & graphic design maestro). None of us have been able to quit our day jobs yet, but with each of these crowdfunding campaigns, we’ve been able to bring these games to life, and that’s everything to us.

In the ensuing years, we’ve been hard at work on a number of other projects: Cthulhu Dreamt, which is an extremely radical sci-fi horror RPG with a heavy metal soundtrack (from Fable Factory, the same genius brain making the new Murka soundtrack) and a highly-emotional storytelling experience; and Goblin Cave, an asymmetric team-based tactics/skirmish game that we just showcased at Origins.

During all of that, we started to really refine what “Action Fiction” meant, and what our design philosophy was. We loved breaking conventions of traditional game design. We loved blurring the lines between player and character, and creating these really fun above-the-table gameplay moments. Physical handouts, puzzles, subverted expectations—all of these became keystones in our design process. And during all those years, at every convention we did, in every panel and talk we gave, we kept coming back to Monsters of Murka

People would stop us at conventions and tell us how much fun they were having, they would ask us questions about it, and we got to see the light on their faces and see how much they were enjoying playing in this silly little satire world we had made. And of course, with the Creative Gap being what it is, the more time we spent designing other games, the better we got as game designers, and the more we wanted to go back to the world of Murka and give it a newer, better life.

And that brings us to today! We’ve been hard at work for about 6 months now giving each of these three books a ground-up redesign. And it’s been humbling, and eye-opening, to look at our old work. Sometimes I feel sheepish about it, and sometimes I’m really impressed by the layers of a particular joke or by some mechanics we designed. It’s just a really wild experience to go back over some of our earliest work—even though it doesn’t feel like it was all that long ago that we wrote it.

We’re excited to bring you these brand new books, and we’re excited to see what else is in store for the world of Murka. And I know I speak for everyone else on the team when I tell you how honored we are, and how blown away we are, at all of your support. It’s been such an amazing experience to see the success of this campaign. This campaign alone has now raised more than all three of our previous Murka campaigns combined, and we’re only halfway done. For me, that’s just... it’s hard to comprehend, if I’m being honest. And I’m just so thankful.

Thank you all, so much. I hope to see you all in the Thursday live stream! Stop by, say hi, ask us some questions, and let us thank you to your (digital) face for your support.

170k STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED: YOU get to suggest an addition to a book!
8 months ago – Mon, Jul 28, 2025 at 05:44:02 AM

This is a stretch goal I have been waiting for the ENTIRE campaign, and I am over the damn MOON about it.

(please don't ask us if the moon exists in Murka, we argue about this a lot)

My fellow Murkans,

LET'S GO AHHHHHHHHHHH

We have now unlocked:
  • 170k:  Community-chosen Addition to the Books

This one will involve YOUR participation. Let me explain.

Community-chosen Addition

YOU will get to decide what will go in the book! We've had some great suggestions so far, like Yellowstone and Dunjin' Donuts, and the competition is gonna be fierce. Here's how it will work:

🗳️ You leave a comment below with what you'd like to see added to the books (monsters, locations, magic items, whatever you want!)

🗳️ We gather up the top suggestions and make a Backerkit poll

🗳️ You vote in the poll, and the highest-voted suggestion gets added to one of the books!

This is your shot to get your dumb BRILLIANT ideas mixed in with our brilliant DUMB ideas! These books wouldn't exist without your support, so we want to give you all exactly what you want, and we're gonna try to do your ideas justice and give them that classic Murka flavor. I'm genuinely so excited about this, it's hard to overstate my hype.

Livestream Shenanigans

We'll be doing another Livestream on Thursday, July 31st, at 6:30 PM Eastern, 3:30 PM Pacific, where we'll be showcasing our new debate mechanics, talking about new add-ons for the campaign, and a whole lot more! Come hang out, chat with us, ask us some questions, and start throwing out those Community Suggestions!

New Stretch Goal Reveal: NOT YET SHH

We're working on a very cool 200k stretch goal, but I can't share what it is yet. The suspense! The AGONY!

Also, out of an abundance of caution (and perhaps optimism), we've gone ahead and started preparing some emergency stretch goals for if we somehow blow past 200k, so get locked in, because we've got even more new stuff on the way!

Want more Murka previews? Wanna ask us your burning questions? Do you just wanna see our faces again? Well now you can!
...
You weirdo.

My Fellow Murkans,

It is my esteemed pleasure to announce that we're conducting yet another live stream where we'll get to have some more face-to-face time with you all!

Date & Time: Thursday, July 31st @ 6:30 PM Eastern, 3:30 PM PST
Rough agenda:
  • New 5e mechanics showcase for Murka (bit of live playtesting
  • New add-on discussion
  • Stretch Goals
  • Open Q&A

New Add-ons Incoming!

We're bringing you all new add-ons next week! They'll be live before Thursday, but wanted to post about them here so you know they're coming.

  1. Dice Goblin Add-on
    • Look. We all know what kind of person you are. Maybe your group gets together weekly. Maybe you haven’t played in months. Maybe you’ve gone through a hundred characters in the last few years. Maybe you’ve never played at all. But none of that matters. You know what does matter? Having all the shiny click-clack math rocks. And you know what? We support that. We got you. Now you can have all of our very neat Murka dice—our coffee-scented Lucky Latte set, our blood-splattered golden Blood Money set, and our inky-rainbow Brick-by-Brick set—all at a hefty discount.
  2. Virtual Tabletop Module
    • Unlocked as one of our most-asked-for Stretch Goals, now all three books will be converted into a Virtual Tabletop experience! We’ll be building a full integration of all three books as a Foundry VTT module, complete with music, maps, monsters, and more! You will also have the option of picking up a system-agnostic VTT asset pack so that you could play Murka in Fantasy Grounds, Roll 20, or even Sigil (remember when that was a thing?). During the pledge manager (after the campaign ends), you’ll be able to choose whether you’d like the Foundry VTT module or the asset pack. Estimated delivery for this is sometime in Q1 2026.
  3. Miniature Series STLs
    • Unlocked as part of our Stretch Goals, now you can get some Murka-themed miniatures! There are four series in total, and each series will have 3-5 miniatures of various sizes. Minis will be provided as print-ready, print-tested STL files. Final monsters in each series will be announced at a later date (keep your eyes on our updates, because you’ll get to vote on which monsters through polls!), but below are a few guaranteed monsters in each set:
      • Series 1: Sir Valence
      • Series 2: Guillaume Fierre
      • Series 3: J. Krowling
      • Series 4: William Maize
  4. Miniature Bundle
    • With this add-on, you can get all 4 series of miniatures bundled together at a cozy discount! You’ll receive every mini from all four series as print-ready, print-tested STL files. Bring Murka to life at your gaming table!
  5. Reversible Dice Tray
    • You asked for it, and now you’re getting it - Monsters of Murka dice trays! These dice trays are reversible, with full-color print on both sides, so you’re getting two dice trays for the price of one! They will fold and store flat, saving space in your bag. One side will feature a Guillaume Fierre themed Flavor City flame pattern, and the other will feature the Monsters of Murka logo on a field of beautiful blue with white stars. Mockups soon!

Trailer Easter Egg

A few of you have already found the secret easter egg in our Backerkit Trailer, and I have absolutely loved seeing all the messages we've received—especially the ones that match our energy, lmao.

If you haven't found it yet, there's still time!

If you have found it, don't go spoiling it in the comments. If you do, you'll make a Freedom Dragon cry. Do you want that on your conscience?

Anyway, that's all for today - just wanted to stop in and say how much we all appreciate the hell out of you.

160k STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED: New One-shot, new combat mechanics, and spell cards!
8 months ago – Thu, Jul 24, 2025 at 09:59:49 AM

Warning: very dumb jokes await thee below. Abandon all hope ye who scroll down.

My fellow Murkans,

I feel like I JUST got caught up on us having hit 150k, and here you are already hitting 160k?! You are MONSTERS. Lucky for you, I love monsters.

We have now unlocked:
  • 160k:  New One-shot Adventure from Arcana Americana: The Great Debate

This is the part where if I were a learning language model, I would say "let's dive in." But since I'm a human with free will, I can say whatever want.

Pretzels are an inferior snack.

New One-shot Adventure: The Great Debate

We're bringing you YET ANOTHER new One-shot adventure, this time featuring a new alternative to combat: debate mechanics (or, "diplomacy" if you wanna be a nerd about it).

⚖️ Debate mechanics allow you and your party to become Master Debaters

⚖️ Don't just roll persuasion. Use unique combinations of skills and attributes to contest your opponent.

⚖️ Take advantage of underhanded fallacies phallussies to gain an edge and influence your way to success.

Hey Jaron, I wanna see how this works!

And you absolutely can, NEXT THURSDAY. We'll be doing another Livestream where we'll showcase these mechanics and you can see them live and in person!

New Stretch Goal Reveal: Print & Play Murka Spell Cards

If we can hit 190k, we'll design and release a printable set of Murka spells, so you can quickly and easily reference spells from all three books! We'll design them so printing them and sleeping them should be a cinch.

Sure, fitting all the text of the 9th level Gorumomancy spell, Maize's Marvelous Microwave, onto a single card, might prove to be more than challenging. But hey, we like a challenge. And in my humble opinion, the real challenge is the friends we made along the way.

Or... Something

150k STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED: New one-shot reveal! Adamantine Chef Triathalon
9 months ago – Wed, Jul 23, 2025 at 05:30:05 AM

ARE Y'ALL READY FOR SOME TRULY LOONEY TOONS?

(Warner Brothers please don't sue us, it was only a joke)

My fellow Murkans,

I can't believe we just hit $150,000. This is by far and away our most successful campaign, and I am mindblown.

Also, we're getting more soundtrack tunes! 3, 2, 1—LET'S JAM.

We have now unlocked:
  • 150k:  Expanded Soundtrack

Let's talk about it!

Expanded Soundtrack

I've mentioned in previous stretch goals that we're getting a soundtrack from Reed Reimer of Fable Factory (baller) and now that soundtrack will have even MORE tunes (ballerer)

🎵 The way we're currently envisioning it is nice, long, ten-ish minute Syrinscape-style tracks that convey a particular *vibe*

🎵 But, each of those tracks (for example, the Combat & Action song) will also be chock full of musical cameos and references

🎵 And now, we'll be doing even more! And YOU can help!

But Jaron, how do I help?

I'm so glad you asked, citizen. Tell us what songs you want us to cameo, and what vibes you want us to cater to! You wanna hear Eiffel 65's "Blue" during your investigation track? Want an immaculate rickroll hidden inside the spooky horror track? Drop your thoughts below!

Anyway, here's Wonderwall.

New Stretch Goal Reveal: New Chromatic Gamut One-shot

If we can hit 180k, we'll be bringing you a third one-shot, this time set in the magnificent city of Magnamalus! This one will showcase our ballroom combat rules, so get locked in for a full-on dance-off.
